About Cynthia Young

Cynthia “Cindy” Young, the grand dame of fine upholstery in South Austin, has been providing her expertise for both residential and commercial projects since 1979. Her 37 years of professional work have provided her with extensive experience in residential upholstery including pillows, cushions, chairs, ottomans, sofas as well as in commerical upholstery including booths, office chairs, and dining chairs.

However Cindy’s speciality is antique restoration which involves everything from spring tying to down cushion refurbishment. She uses original techniques, original stuffings, and tools that were used on the furniture originally. Because the original stuffings tell the history of your furniture, it is critically important to keep these and maintain the integrity of your antique. Cindy’s vast knowledge of antique restoration has its origin in an upholstery conservation symposium in Williamsburg, VA, as well as studying upholstery conservation and restoration in numerous museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the Smithsonian in Maryland, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and the Society for Preservation of New England Antiquities.

Cindy taught an upholstery career program at Austin Community College for 22 years; for 15 of those years she was department head in upholstery. Textiles, furniture history, and antique restoration were part of the 1400 hour vocational certification program. During this time, Cindy not only contributed articles to Upholstery Magazine but also developed and filmed a series of award winning upholstery videos which are still shown on the ACC channel.

Because Cynthia Young Upholstery is small and exclusive, it is by appointment only. As Cindy herself said, “I’m the real thing—a true craftsman with 37 years of experience, not an internet phenomenon!” By choosing Cindy for your next upholstery project, you will receive the quality, dedication, and care that you and your furniture deserve.
